The Barn Mixarama

It is amazing what the average man and woman on the street can do with software today. On my last post I showed a bit of what I am learning in terms of enhancing my photographic skills. Today, I go into something I have absolutely no intention of mastering: mixing music. For that we have the very capable Magaidi, Msanii and Mocha among others. So my dabbling in this is purely out of curious interest.

For my initial foray into this world, I decided to make a mix of some tunes that would see me on the dance floor the full time they were playing. I particularly remember them being played at The Barn while it was around. Those were the days. Some friends of mine and I were reminiscing the other day, and we talked of how innocent we were back then, relative to today. We'd get there, and get high on soda (Fanta for them, as they stated). Of that whole crew, today I am one of very few that never made the switch to alcohol. Those were fun times! Too bad the place didn't last.

With that bit of nostalgia out of the way, I present to you the tool I used to generate this mix: Audacity. It is available for Linux, Windows and Mac based systems. I run Linux on my machine, so I installed the appropriate one for that system. It is a very easy to learn, intuitive tool; perfect for an absolute beginner like myself. And best of all, it's free. Can't get better than that! So for all y'all that want to follow in the footsteps of them Mix Kings n' Queens, here's your chance!

I now leave you with my highly amateurish mix. Enjoy!

Eish, you peepo and all these different meanings of egm! I should probably compile a list of everything I've heard so far as to what those three letters stand for.

Pata ziki na ufurahie kabisa!

uwiiiiiiiiiiiiii THANK YOU man...WOLOLO cocoa jambo (that's what I hear and I'm sticking with it!)...loooooooooove the selection...represent some of my faves...

I've tried my hand at dejaying but would only do it privately or among friends. Somehow I'm convinced that I was a dj in my previous life...the time is past now and I know that I wouldn't dj publicly because of my excitement and almost trance-like status when listening to music!!!

Princess

Every Girl's Man, I agree with Agiasi, you should do a post with an entire list of all the new meanings of EGM. Anyway, lemme get down to sampling your mix.

Last year I tried to reproduce Busta Rhymes' "Dangerous" on Fruity Loops 6. It came out ok but it took me like two whole months! That was the end of my Fruity Loops career.

Well done!

I should be hangin' my head in shame.

I have done a couple of mixtapes......lakini for public scrutiny, HAPANA!

Only one is out there and the review was harsh. So, until my skills are kidogo better....

Na hiyo fruity loops ndiyo nini? Looks like I have some music terms I need to educate myself on! Yup, this thing chukuas kazi. That's why I'm not even cheating myself ati I'ma master it. Purely mchezo is all it is.

Mocha
Asante. The only reason I have this out in the wild and not quacking in my boots is cause I know it's definitely not clubworthy and that all I am doing it for is my mwenjoyo. Yaani even ati cross fading, equalizing, all that manenos I didn't bother with. The lainishaing was done purely by macho na masikio, and where I thought the next song coming on made sense is where I unganishad them. Very kienyeji. Yours I await kwa hamu mob.

egm - kudos man. I have always said you can get away with a lot if the song selection is hot and you seem to know what to put on. I say keep at it, you can teach beat matching but song selection is a totally different story. I enjoyed the mix a lot. That 'Where do you go' song you put on - been a minute since I heard it. Keep at it man, keep at it.
